The high ecological and fish stock value and the diversity of habitats and communities have made the Malgrats Islands a place worthy of a high degree of protection. Hence, both the Malgrats Islands as well as El Toro Island were declared marine reserves in May 2004, thereby culminating the process initiated by the City Council of Calvià in 1984.

The waters of the Malgrats Islands, covering an area of 100 hectares, and of El Toro Island, comprising 150 hectares, in the west of the municipality constitute a real paradise for scuba-diving lovers. Declared as reserve marines in May 2004, they comprise a huge biological wealth with numerous species and allow for scuba diving with diving suit and free diving.
